And it’s been a bumpy one - battling price increases, supply problems, lockdowns and staff shortages. We have however weathered the storm and come out on top. Our team is stronger than ever with a solid structure and some incredibly talented installers on board. And despite all the challenges we are pretty happy with 2021! We won Viking Applicator of the Year and have also been awarded ‘Gold’ status by Sitewise. We are beginning a fun journey into the world of sustainability (read more below) and we also moved in to our new forever home in Wanaka - if you haven't visited us yet, please pop in! We hope that there have been some ups to balance out the inevitable downs this year for you too. And from our team to yours, we wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and a successful and prosperous 2022!

While many were barbecuing and boating, we were swamped over the holiday break and have brought several people on board to strengthen our long-serving team of waterproofing specialists. We are so happy to welcome Dave Dorset back in a supervisor capacity in our Queenstown team. He’s working alongside Andrew Bull, who has stepped in together with Vitor and Dave to run the Queenstown team. If you need to contact any of them, give them a call or email: Andrew 021761641 Dave 0212892220 Vitor 0273925200 In Wanaka, Mathias Alvarez has been promoted to supervisor and will help Rodger in the day to day running of the Wanaka operation. We, too, did a bit of barbecuing! If 2020 were a landmark, it would have been a hill covered in cowpats. To bring in the New Year, we got the entire Watertight team together one fine Friday evening at the top of “The Hill”. We gathered to have delicious BBQ, take away the taste of rolling lockdowns and to seize the chance to raise a glass to a new year filled with potential. Here we all are enjoying a sausage or two!

Half Time... Again! (Who's got the oranges?!)

As usual, one minute we are shouting Happy New Year! - The next thing we know we are in August and more than half the year is behind us! The old saying is 'time flies when you are having fun', well, when there is weird stuff going on (borders opening, pandemics, etc!) and there is still plenty of work to be getting on with, 'time' is sitting pretty in an A380 in Business Class!

It is a challenging time in the industry with many issues around materials. There have been numerous price increases from suppliers, and we all know there are supply problems. Overall though, nearly all of our products are still available in New Zealand at present, which is very good news.

Having said that, it is still a really good idea to confirm your business with us as soon as you can. Order early to secure prices and materials so we can work into your timeline seamlessly.

No doubt everyone is very excited about the border restrictions easing up. As well as the ability of unrestricted travel, it will also allow access to the skilled workers entering from around the globe. With ever increasing demand for our product we are looking forward to bolstering our workforce. This and being able to support our current experienced team who have been working tirelessly whilst battling terrible weather, seasonal illness and the COVID virus.

New Sustainability Policy

Looking after the planet is important to all of us. At Watertight Systems we are committed to fostering responsible and sustainable construction and infrastructure in the Queenstown Lakes District and Aotearoa.

We are working towards the best work practices we can achieve. To that end, the entire company is being scrutinised with a waste audit based around or new Sustainability Policy.

This will tell us where best we can make some changes and improvements.

New Queenstown Yard and Office

The hardworking Queenstown team are finally coming home. We have taken over the lease at Unit 11 Shotover Ridge on Glenda Drive, Frankton. We will have a tidy storage yard and office for the team to work from. We are currently completing a custom fit out, feel free to call in and say hi anytime from end August onwards.

Do you know your Trenching Excavation requirements?

A common Health and Safety obstacle that we come across onsite is trench excavations that are not fit for purpose. These can cause hazardous working conditions for onsite workers and risks for all involved (workers, PCBU1 and PCBU2).

To create more awareness, we are now including the information below with all tanking quotes. We hope this will help with reducing the risks that all onsite teams could potentially face.

Working together with all of our customers and contractors, we endeavour to make compliant trench excavations more common. The end goal is to create a safer work environment for all of our teams who work in and around them.

What inspired us to embark on this? The safety of our team, and anyone working around our teams, is paramount and we are taking every practical step to ensure they go home safely with out incident each day. Excavation failures are particularly dangerous because they may occur quickly, limiting the ability of workers to escape, especially if the collapse is extensive. The consequences are significant as the falling debris can bury or crush a person in its path resulting in internal crush injuries or suffocation, either of which may lead to a fatality.

Jannik, Watertight’s Commercial Manager says the main guidelines are:

  • The bottom of the excavation should sit at footings level (not at the top of the slab)
  • There should be a width of at least 1m at the lowest point
  • Excavation should be battered at an angle of 45° as shown, or
  • Excavation benched at widths and heights of 1m as shown

Featured Project

Mount Isthmus Lodge

Mt Isthmus Lodge is a stunning luxury lodge located on the shores of Lake Hawea. The unique curved roofline replicates topographical contours of the local landscape, while the angled rooflines emulate the surrounding peaks.

This incredible building features copper roofing throughout, with the roofline flowing into the cladding, becoming the exterior walls.

Watertight’s scope on this job was to install Ardex Weldtec heat-welded single layer waterproofing membrane to the entire roof structure, making the framework waterproof. The membrane was then expertly covered with copper roofing by our friends at Architectural Roofing.

Due to the complexity of the design and the stunning location, this project was a pleasure to work on.

And Finally...

Thanks for taking the time to read this. Look out for the next Watertight update in the summer.

Please feel free to get in touch with us if there is anything you feel like having a chat about.

Kind regards,

Kate and Andrew
