It's Winter

August 14, 2024

Newsletter 2024

It’s winter (in case you hadn’t noticed!) and the demand for warm roofs is going through the roof! 😂 There are two reasons for this trend:

  1. Higher thermal efficiency, resulting in lower energy costs and increased home comfort.
  2. Changes to the building code requiring a higher R value. Although the NZ Building Code sets a minimum requirement for R-values, aiming for a higher R-value will lead to energy savings, reduced waste of resources and money, and, due to increasing buyer awareness, a higher resale value of the building.

Watertight Systems saw a threefold increase in warm roof installations in 2023 compared to 2022 in both Wanaka and Queenstown with architecturally designed homes using Nuralite, Viking, Sealco and Equus warm roof systems. With the increasing awareness, installation, and confidence in warm roof systems, as well as further innovations into cost-effective applications, we are sure to maintain this trend!

So, what else have we got going on?

Good to have a green roof? Here's living proof!

We recently installed a Nuratherm Warm Roof Garden system in Wanaka. The concept of integrating nature into our living spaces and creating a sophisticated yet peaceful environment for retreat and relaxation remains timeless.

In addition to providing additional living space, green roofs also:

  • increase property values,
  • control temperatures within buildings,
  • support biodiversity,
  • mitigate stormwater runoff and alleviate overflow.
  • protect the roof substrate from extreme weather, increasing the lifespan of roofs and enhancing the overall beauty and comfort of our homes.

Green roofs transform our buildings into eco-friendly, sustainable havens. The aesthetic appeal of these green spaces blends seamlessly into the alpine environment, enhancing the beauty and harmony of our surroundings.

Keep in mind, that careful planning and a good waterproofing system are the absolute minimum to keep your Roof Garden thriving for years. There are warm roof experts and roof garden experts — make sure that you make a well-informed decision, so listen to all the experts.

Watertight Updates

🤘 This is Brad. He is into Metal! 🤘

You may be aware that we have been dabbling in offering Metal Roofing and Cladding over the past few years. We’ve stopped dabbling and have gone full metal with our new venture partner Brad Van Lierop. He is well known in the Central Otago Roofing Industry having been the branch manager at Stratco Roofing for the past seven years and is an experienced installer who has worked in NZ, Europe and the Middle East. Together we have created a new company to run alongside Watertight Systems… Watertight Metal Ltd will offer professional metal roofing and cladding installation with the same great service and systems that Watertight Systems is known for.

We will be working with our local roll formers and manufacturers to deliver whatever type of metal you need! Our new website is on the way, if you’d like to speak to Brad about Metal or get a quote get in touch at brad@watertightmetal.co.nz or 0211962509.

Who is the new boss?

You probably know Jannik, our German running machine and resident problem solver/technical guru. Jannik has been an essential part of the team at Watertight for eight years now, having worked his way up the ranks from applicator to QS and now Operations Manager in place of Andrew. We are pleased to announce that Jannik now joins Kate and Andrew as a well-deserved Shareholder of Watertight.

A fond farewell and a hearty Kia Ora!

We've had a few changes in our team since the last newsletter, and we're excited to spill the beans! We have welcomed some highly skilled applicators from the Philippines, Nepal, and South America. It’s fantastic to have such a diverse team united in fostering a culture of acceptance, appreciation, and hard work. It is comforting for both ourselves and for our clients to know we have a solid and reliable team to cover the demanding workload. Plus, we must admit, we're eagerly anticipating some new culinary delights as the team takes charge of the H&S meeting snacks!

Also, our beloved Imogen bid adieu to her role as the Watertight Wanaka Office Manager in March, jetting off to the UK to embark on her next adventure in the land of endless queues and polite nods.

But fear not! Our knack for acquiring awesome people led us to our new Wanaka Office Manager, Theresa Ulrich, direct from Germany, the world’s engineering powerhouse. (That’s her, looking picture-perfect on the right, of course!) Teresa has a background in Mechanical engineering and Fashion Design, but what really makes her tick is the great outdoors and her running addiction. She's practically made for Wanaka's adventurous vibes.

Rightio, it’s back to work - these roofs aren’t going to sort themselves! Stay safe and warm, and we’ll see you for an email later in the year!

and The Watertight Team
